Social Work as an independent discipline


Social Work is an independent social science: As an independent science it has its own different kind of social field, frontier, history, philosophy, knowledge, principles, code of ethics, values, systems, tools, techniques, and methods. And it’s not a branch of any other sciences. The subject matter of this discipline is concerned with interaction between people and their environment which affects the ability of people to accomplish their life tasks, alleviate distress, and realize their aspirations and values. As a social science, it has scientific methods to deal with social problem related to individual, family, group and community.
The Social Work has its’ own characteristics and due to its distinct characteristics, the Social Work known as independent discipline. The major characteristics are mentioned below with the ideas of Farkey O. William.
A)    Focus in on the wholeness and totality of the person;
(Need to understand about person and his/her surrounding environmental factors)
B)    Emphasis is on the importance of the family in molding and influencing behavior
(Family is a central focus for intervention)
C)    Utilization of community resources in helping people to solve problem is very important
(Resource system is the key in social work practice)
D)    Use of supervisory process provides guidance and direction to inexperienced worker and continuing growth of the experienced.
(Qualified and professional personnel provides the supervision in academic study)
E)     Social Work has unique educational program
(It has cyclical process of learning. Provides theory in classroom and seeks to practice it into assigned field work)
F)     Social Work emphasizes on basic three processes.
(Case work, Group work and Community Organization. It means, we need to know about the three levels of clients)
G)    Social work has distinctive professional bodies.
{Like: National Association of social Worker (NASW), Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) etc.}
